Fashion Gxd Magazine : How did the idea for your business come about?
Answer: Our business idea came into fruition one evening when me, my three daughters and my mother were having a “girls evening” at my mom’s making candles. In the past, I would make candles as a hobby with my daughters. During conversation that evening at mom’s, I was like “we should begin our own candle business… we all love the way they make us feel and the way they lighten any mood”. So, at that moment, we started throwing around names and hashtags and came up with “Lit Moments – a candle for every mood”. We wanted more than just a name and we wanted our candle names to have meaning… we wanted the names to describe our family and what we thought relationships were made up. Our Signature Line is geared more toward commitment. Commitment to each other, to God and to life. Our fall and winter names captivate moments and memories. Also, the more we learned about the science of a candle, the more we wanted to design a product that would be vegan, free from harmful products and have a clean burn…. All while emitting a luxurious scent.
Fashion Gxd Magazine: How do you find people to bring into your organization that truly care about the organization the way you do?
Answer: Passion is everything. You can tell what a person truly loves by their conversations.
Fashion Gxd Magazine: What three pieces of advice would you give to other children who want to become entrepreneurs?
Answer: (1) Find your passion; (2) Grow personally while developing a professional network; (3) Give back what you have learned
Fashion Gxd Magazine: If you had the chance to start your career over again, what would you do differently?
Answer: I would take my time and develop our branding rather than having “take 1’s and take 2’s”.
Fashion Gxd Magazine: What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur?
Answer: (1) Vision; (2) Tenacity; (3) Leadership
Fashion Gxd Magazine: What have been some of your failures, and what have you learned from them?
Answer: Oh wow… I have had my share of failures, but I focus on what was the teachable moment within those failures and I do my best to learn from them and I convey that same sentiment to my candle family.
Fashion Gxd Magazine: How many hours do you work a day on average?
Answer: You know… we put in so many hours to design the best version of our products. When you love what you do, the hours get away from you. I recall one day when we worked from one Saturday early afternoon until 5:30 A.M. that Sunday morning. We still made it to church at 11:15 and of course a nap was needed afterwards. On an average, we may work 12 – 16 hours a day, while still grabbing a healthy a meal or collaborating on the elliptical.
Fashion Gxd Magazine: Describe/outline your typical day?
Answer: : My typical day starts with “good mornings” (always) before leading into any conversation; emails, recapping yesterday’s events/conversations/brainstorming, checking orders and supplies, completing orders, a 20-30 minute walk or some form of exercise, closing the evening with the next day’s checklists. We live off checklists.
Fashion Gxd Magazine: How has being an entrepreneur affected your family life?
Answer: Thankfully it is a family business, so it has enabled us to spend more time with one another
Fashion Gxd Magazine: What motivates you?
Answer: My family motivates me. The way I see them and see the world makes me work that much harder to ensure that they, too, have a legacy to leave behind.
Fashion Gxd Magazine: How do you generate new ideas?
Answer: My ideas are generating in the wee hours of the morning. Things that are around me give me ideas. I also pitch ideas to my husband and daughters for their thoughts. Additionally, I could be watching TV or reading a book but at any given moment I may have spaced out and began to think about the next thing and/or how to improve on our brand. There’s always room for improvement.
Fashion Gxd Magazine: What sacrifices have you had to make to be a successful entrepreneur?
Answer: Being honest… Sometimes I spend way too much time in our studio, even after everyone else has left. So, I would say sacrificing a little family time.
Fashion Gxd Magazine: Where do you see yourself and your business in 10 years? 20 years?
Answer: In 10 years, I see myself still working in our business but more on the admin side and less hands on and in 20 years I see our business being featured on the Forbes List.
