Fashion Gxd Magazine : How did the idea for your business come about?
Answer: I've always wanted to be an entrepreneur and with representation of black woman entrepreneurs being limited, I was driven to start a business in cosmetics. Also, I've always loved lipsticks and I have always been known to wear unique, bold colors so I wanted to curate my own brand.
Fashion Gxd Magazine : How do you find people to bring into your organization that truly care about the organization the way you do?
Answer: I am lucky to have close family and friends that have helped from the beginning and continue to support me throughout my endeavors.
Fashion Gxd Magazine : What three pieces of advice would you give to other children who want to become entrepreneurs?
Answer: I would say do a lot of research into whatever industry you are trying to enter. Also, be consistent and persistent because success does not come fast or easy. Lastly, having a concrete target market is key for success because it helps with marketing and converting sales.
Fashion Gxd Magazine :If you had the chance to start your career over again, what would you do differently?
Answer: I would have saved more financially. This way, I would have been able to invest more into hiring professionals to create marketing materials that I ended up creating myself.
Fashion Gxd Magazine :What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur ?
Answer: Strategic Thinking, Great Communication, and Adaptability
Fashion Gxd Magazine :What have been some of your failures, and what have you learned from them?
Answer: A lot of money was wasted in the research and development phase because I did not put enough effort into researching and was in a rush to launch. I've now learned to put more time into research as this can really save a lot of money in mistakes.
Fashion Gxd Magazine : How many hours do you work a day on average?
Answer: I work on my brand throughout the day as I also have a full-time job. Overall, I'd say about 5-6 hours a day.
Fashion Gxd Magazine :Describe/outline your typical day?
Answer: My typical day consists of coming up with different content ideas and planning various promotional efforts such as future pop up events, partnerships or other kinds of advertising. I am constantly responding to emails and checking my brand's social media page throughout the day.
Fashion Gxd Magazine : How has being an entrepreneur affected your family life?
Answer: It has brought my family closer as they continue to support me.
Fashion Gxd Magazine :What motivates you?
Answer: I motivate myself to keep pushing because I see my brand evolving in so many ways. I won't stop until my brand is a household name.
Fashion Gxd Magazine: How do you generate new ideas?
Answer: I think about what would attract new customers and get creative from there. I like to consider my target market and what they would be more susceptible to.
Fashion Gxd Magazine : What sacrifices have you had to make to be a successful entrepreneur?
Answer: Time and money most of all. I can't spend as frivolously as I once did or hang out with friends as often as I did in the past because I have to invest that time and money into my business.
Fashion Gxd Magazine : Where you see yourself and your business in 10 years? 20 years?
Answer: Currently, we offer matte liquid lipsticks but I see the business expanding tremendously. In 10 years, I want to have tackled all areas of color cosmetics including highlighters, contour kits, eye shadow palettes etc and even offering natural skin care within the brand. In 20 years, I see myself opening a range of stores around the country to house and sell all of my products, employing people of color and providing opportunities to those who deserve it.
