  • Fashion Gxd Magazine : How did the idea for your business come about?

  • Answer: The idea to start to Dai Baker Creative Group LLC came about during my junior year of college. I had been freelancing in marketing and public relations for some time up until that point. I always knew I would start a business but unsure of what kind. It just kind of made sense to start a creative agency as I was already in the industry and pursuing a public relations degree at that time.

  • Fashion Gxd Magazine : How do you find people to bring into your organization that truly care about the organization the way you do?

  • Answer: After trial and error, I learned to be intentional in my hiring process. I only bring people on who have been an intern first. This allows me to see how they work and if we can work together. I can also see if they are committed to the agency's success. As a leader, I only want a team member working with me that wants to be there.

  • Fashion Gxd Magazine : What three pieces of advice would you give to other children who want to become entrepreneurs?

  • Answer: 1) Start a business based on your talents or passion. Being an entrepreneur can be draining but it is a lot easier to wan tot get up if you building something based on your talent or passion. 2) Learn to work when you are productive the most and sleep when you are not. As a creative, I prefer to work through the night and sleep during the day. I try not to force myself to get work done in the early morning as it will not be my best work. 3) Never be too closed minded that you miss out on knowledge. Entrepreneurship does not have to be lonely if you are open to finding your tribe.

  • Fashion Gxd Magazine :If you had the chance to start your career over again, what would you do differently?

  • Answer: The only thing I would do differently is looking for my business tribe sooner than I did. Entrepreneurship got a lot easier when I had others to share my success and frustrations with. It's so comforting to be able to speak with someone who understands how you feel.

  • Fashion Gxd Magazine :What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur ?

  • Answer: The three most important skills that are needed would have to be ambition, resilience and discipline. In order to be a successful entrepreneur you have to be able to stay focus, be driven and able to recover from set backs. Entrepreneurship is a journey and only the strongest will come out successful.

  • Fashion Gxd Magazine :What have been some of your failures, and what have you learned from them?

  • Answer: One of my first failures was delivering poorly done work to a client. Deep down inside I knew I was not sending over my best work but I was embarrassed when the client pointed it out. However, I was thankful they gave me a second chance. Since that moment, I never submitted anything that was not top quality work. Another failure

  • Fashion Gxd Magazine : How many hours do you work a day on average?

  • Answer: A typical work day range from 8 to 10 hours.

  • Fashion Gxd Magazine :Describe/outline your typical day?

  • Answer:

    • 6:20 am - Wake up and get my daughter up for school.

    • 6:55 am - Get my daughter off to the bus.

    • 7 am - 9 am - Go back to sleep

    • 9 am - 10:30 am - Wake up, take a shower and grab breakfast

    • 10:30 am - 1 pm - Check emails, work on client projects, admin work,

    • 1 - 2 pm - take a break and have lunch

    • 2 - 3 pm get back to work and make any phone calls

    • 3:15 pm - 5 pm get my daughter off the bus and work on homework

    • 5 pm - 6 pm make and eat dinner

    • 6 pm - 12 am work some more on projects and business tasks as well as watch Hulu or Netflix with my daughter.

  • Fashion Gxd Magazine : How has being an entrepreneur affected your family life?

  • Answer: Being an entrepreneur is time consuming. While you may have office hours in place for your clients, you do not for yourself. You are always building your business or at the very least thinking about it. Because of the amount of time and dedication it take to be an entrepreneur I have had to sacrifice time with my family mainly my daughter. As she is getting older, I am finding ways to incorporate her being involved in my business. Having her work with me allows us to spend time together. I am also make sure I take my daughter out on mommy - daughter dates so that she does not forgotten. I suffer from mom guilt a lot.

  • Fashion Gxd Magazine :What motivates you?

  • Answer: My daughter is my biggest motivation. I want her to be proud of me and to inspire to pursue her dreams when she is old enough. It makes me smile whenever she mentions that I own my agency.

  • Fashion Gxd Magazine: How do you generate new ideas?

  • Answer: Generating new ideas is a big part of my business as a creative. I am constantly generating new ideas for my clients. I typically do this by brainstorming with my team to gather their ideas. I also look to Instagram and Pinterest to get my creative juices flowing.

  • Fashion Gxd Magazine : What sacrifices have you had to make to be a successful entrepreneur?

  • Answer: Since I started my business during my undergraduate years, I scarified being able to enjoy the college life. I opted out of attending parties and events to build my business. I even do this now. I keep my social life to a bare minimum so that I can focus on building my agency. But now that I have been in business for almost four years, I think I can have a little bit of a social life again.

  • Fashion Gxd Magazine : Where you see yourself and your business in 10 years? 20 years?

  • Answer: In ten years I hope to have finish all of my education, which includes getting my last degree a Phd. I am hope to transition from a adjunct faculty member to a tenured professor. I am hoping to be able to expand my team to include a core team of 5 to 10 staff members and have a central office downtown office location. I hope within the next 10 to 20 years to see my creative agency grow to serve more clients and to increase our reach beyond the United States and go International. I am hoping DBCG becomes a household name.
