Fashion Gxd Magazine : How did the idea for your business come about?

Valley Girl Hair Collection: Well, I come from a background that dealt heavily in the hair industry and the businesswoman in me saw an opportunity and knew it would be perfect me to launch my own hair extension line. As for the name and brand itself, it comes directly from my life and how I lived growing up as a child. I'm a Valley Girl!

Fashion Gxd Magazine : How do you find people to bring into your organization that truly care about the organization the way you do?

Valley Girl Hair Collection: I can honestly say that there is no one that is going to work for your own company the way that you will. Therefore, you have to find good workers and motivate them to do their job and make work fun.

Fashion Gxd Magazine :what three pieces of advice would you give to college students who want to become entrepreneurs?

Valley Girl Hair Collection:: 1. Do it!  Do it! Do it! Make sure that it's something you are passionate about. Doing something for money or wealth doesn't last long, so make sure you truly love it. 2. Be original. You can have the same type of business as others but be original with your branding. 3.Be yourself. You do not have to conform to what others are doing. Be yourself.

Fashion Gxd Magazine : If you had the chance to start your career over again, what would you do differently?

Valley Girl Hair Collection:: Nothing at all. I love everything that I do so I invest in my brand and I am focused on expansion. I am not just your typical salesperson selling hair. Valley Girl is not your typical hair company it’s a lifestyle. So, I wouldn't change a thing.

Fashion Gxd Magazine : What would you say are the top 3 skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur?

Valley Girl Hair Collection:: 1. Keeping God first is important! It keeps you grounded.  2. Being hungry and ambitious, when you stay hungry you’re always going to work. 3. Be smart it is important to work hard but strategic on your brand. Those are all major things to remember when starting your entrepreneurial journey.

Fashion Gxd Magazine : What have been some of your failures and what have you learned from them?

Valley Girl Hair Collection:: I trust the wrong people with my business plan that took my formula and attempted to implement it on their own. Big mistake. Nondisclosure and noncompete agreements are essential when working with people you have to share your formula with.

Fashion Gxd Magazine : How many hours a day do you work on average?

Valley Girl Hair Collection:: 24 hours, of course! My job never stops. My customer base derives from all over the world, where there may be a major time difference that I must accommodate. I nap throughout the day, but I rarely sleep.

Fashion Gxd Magazine : Describe/Outline your typical day.

Valley Girl Hair Collection:: No day is the same. Once I do settle down I can get a little rest it's usually between 3:00am-5: 30am. I wake up every morning at 5:30 am and I start my mornings with prayer. I answer priority text messages, emails, and return phone calls. I come to my showroom and work there for the majority of the day, although some days I may spend a lot of time doing hair deliveries or shipping orders. My days are rarely the same.

Fashion Gxd Magazine : How has being an entrepreneur affected your family life?

Valley Girl Hair Collection:: Being an entrepreneur and business owner can render a significant amount of damage to your family life. Though I am extremely close to my immediate family, I've put my social life on the backburner and all friendships do not survive. I also have 2 kids, an 11 and 12 year old that I don't get to spend time with as often as I'd like. I've had to hire an assistant solely responsible for spending time with my children in my absence.

Fashion Gxd Magazine : What motivates you?

Valley Girl Hair Collection:: My children motivate me. My ambition and my drive to win are also heavy motivators. I want to be successful and provide the best for my family. I’m motivated by that.

Fashion Gxd Magazine : How do you generate new ideas?

Valley Girl Hair Collection:: I do a lot of research. I love all things hair and beauty so I am always researching the past and present and I try to be innovative with my next idea. Women motivate me. We love our hair, we love being beautiful, it's such an inspirational industry.

Fashion Gxd Magazine :What sacrifices have you had to make to be a successful entrepreneur?

Valley Girl Hair Collection:: There was a time where I hit a very rough patch. I had to go without certain things. I downsized my home and relocated. My children went without a decent Christmas one year. I took their Christmas money ($400) to start Valley Girl Hair.

Fashion Gxd Magazine : Where do you see yourself and your business in 10 years? 20 years?

Valley Girl Hair Collection::  Valley Girl definitely has a lot of expansion plans, that may or may not involve hair. Valley Girl is a lifestyle, so we're always seeking innovative ideas to expand our brand. The possibilities are endless!
