Tell Us About Yourself. Who is Charron Monaye ?
Charron Monaye is a woman who has found favor and grace in my pen. Through the years, I have mastered the art of communicating my thoughts and feelings through writing books, scripts, articles, and poetry. When I am not working or maintaining my household, I am writing.
When did you realize that you wanted to become a writer?
Writing was never something I aspired to do, it just came naturally. As a child, I would write poetry to share my thoughts or emotions because I always felt that speaking them would either cause me to be ridiculed or judged. I was a child that really cared what people thought about me. So, instead of fighting for my voice, I just spoke through my pen because I knew it would not speak back. After winning a poetry contest and having my poem, “Alone” published in the publication Tears of Fire, I felt motivated to continue writing. Then, writing poetry turned into writing articles for magazines, to writing song lyrics, to writing books, to play scripts, and now children’s books. So what started out as a form of expression, has now evolved into a legendary and profitable business.
What is Pen Legacy, how did it begin?
So Pen Legacy, LLC is my company. It was created in 2008, while regrouping my life after divorce, in order to give myself a platform to write, publish, and sell my own books and products. Instead of struggling through, I turned to my pen and gift to help me at my most darkest times. But who knew that a company that was birthed out of struggle would evolve into a writing and book publishing service that serves the everyday person. At Pen Legacy, we are now a literary conglomerate geared to helping aspiring writers share their stories by providing a platform to elevate their unique voices.
Which is your favorite book you’ve published and why?
I have so many, but if I had to choose just one, I would say, my book entitled Stop Asking For Permission and Give Notice. Stop Asking for Permission and Give Notice was a book that I wrote when I was trying to find my place in life and the purpose behind everything I have done.
You can say, I was trying to find out “why” I was facing so many trials and “what” message was I missing in the lessons. I was a mess, but as always my pen knew how to save me. I must say though, as I was writing that book, it literally became God speaking through my pen and making me realize that my mental capacity was keeping me in situations that should have ended years ago. I was my biggest problem and my need to please people was my kryptonite. It was like God was coaching me through my problems and by the time I finished writing that book, I had a new perspective of life, love, finance, and myself. The woman you see today was birthed after that book was written. I am most grateful for that book!
What makes your pen different from the others?
I speak from my perspective, experience, truth and I have a way with words. (laughs) But seriously, my pen speaks for the child who has so much to say but might be afraid of what society will say. My pen speaks for the mother who has so many dreams and goals for herself, but oftentimes rejects herself because she feels guilty of not being present for her children. My pen speaks for the woman who wants love, but feels that her independence and lack of understanding of how to “just be” a woman may be blocking her from her soulmate. My pen speaks to the imperfect person who is not afraid to say, “I’m flawed, but still fearless”.
My pen relates to the everyday woman, the human side of us that is oftentimes afraid to excel but know that if they don’t, it won’t get done.
Where do you see yourself and your brand five years from now?
Writing films and really evolving in the children’s book genre. Last year for my 10th year anniversary as a solo author, I embarked on this children’s book journey. And can I just say, it has been the best ride thus far. I feel like a kid again. Plus, the main character Michelle is the younger version of myself, as my middle name is Michelle. So it’s like, I am able to tap into my kid-at-heart side and just enjoy my childhood age through illustrations and adventures.
