This week we sat down with CEO Kandice Standifer. Kandice Standifer affectionately known by many as Kandi was born in Dade City Florida, and grew up in Newark, New Jersey where she attended the Newark, New Jersey Public School System. From a very young age, she has always had a passion for doing hair which she pursued her dream by enrolling at the Concourse Cosmetology School where she graduated and became a cosmetologist. Putting that cosmetology degree to great use, she became the owner of SD Glam, a business that specializes in and promotes healthy hair, loc maintenance, and loc extensions.
Kandi is the mother of three daughters and the GiGi to one granddaughter. Also the cousin of Legendary R&B singer Faith Evans. She considers herself an outgoing person who is compassionate, feisty at times, and has a heart of gold. Kandi knows and understands that life can have its ups and downs but nevertheless you have to be strong and trust God for the breakthrough. She credits her mom as well as her grandmother for the positive guidance that they taught and showed her by example. She has always had family support in all the things she has experienced.
Kandi has an Instagram following of over 12k and is also the Host of The Glam Talk Podcast where your mess becomes a message and your test becomes a testimony. The no-judgment zone podcast makes you feel good about yourself even if you’ve been broken or your self-esteem is low. The podcast is available on YouTube and Anchor. Topics range from beauty, fashion, self-love, teen pregnancy, mental health, domestic violence, and more. Here's a look at the exclusive interview with the rising brand.
FGM: It’s an honor to sit down with you. Tell us a little about your brand and how you’ve come to this vastly successful peek in your career?
Kandi: How SD Glam came to this vastly successful peek is because of determination and never giving up when the odds were against me. Also, trusting God and knowing better days were coming.
FGM: Who are the clients/what are the projects that you most enjoy working on?
Kandi: All my clients mean the world to me whether they are my clients that come every 30 days or my celebrity clients. Without them, my hopes and dreams can’t be complete.
FGM: How do you feel you make a difference in the world?
Kandi: Me making a difference in the world comes with my creativity and determination in my choices in life.
FGM: Tell us about a time when you showed determination to continue as an entrepreneur
Kandi: The time when SDGlam (brand) myself (Kandice) showed determination as an entrepreneur is when moving to Atlanta without direction. I just knew I wanted more and couldn’t fall. I realized and understood nothing in life comes without hard work and determination so I never gave up on myself and SDGlam as a brand.
FGM: Give me the three best qualities of your brand?
Kandi: Three best qualities of SDGlam are having passion, creativity, and determination.
FGM: Being an entrepreneur is a 24/7 job, how did you get ready for that?
Kandi: Getting ready for Entrepreneurship was not always easy so as a child I knew it was what I wanted and God had planned for me. Because I was always different and really never fitted in. So I made up my mind to reach for the stars and became my own boss.
FGM: How did you acquire the ability to work under pressure to beat meet deadlines as an entrepreneur?
Kandi: Working under pressure has always been an adrenaline rush for me. A little weird but my best work comes from working under pressure. I feel God shows out more then. I don’t know why I do, but I do.
FGM: What is your favorite inspirational point, place, to develop new brand developments?
Kandi: My favorite inspirational point and place to develop new brands and developments are when I take my mind back to where I started and knowing that I want more in life.
My creativity starts to increase and understanding that nothing in life comes without hard work and determination. It’s programming my mind to always be ready for upgrades.
FGM: Which current public figure, are you inspired by or appreciate the most?
Kandi: A public figure I’m inspired by the most needless to say is that I have a few but if I had to pick one it would be Maya Angelou for her poems and motivational speaking.
FGM: How do you handle stress?
Kandi: I handle stress by staying prayed up!
FGM: What are the three qualities you feel an entrepreneur must have?
Kandi: Qualities an Entrepreneur should have is motivation determination and consistency
I know you ask for three but I had to put four which is last but not least learning to take constructive criticism.
FGM: Where do you see your business in 10 years? How do you plan to get there?
Kandi: Where I see my business in 10 years is worldwide and global!
My plan to get there is to keep God first and staying
consistent with the determination.
