How did the idea for your business come about? The idea for my business derived from not being heard and constantly being told, “It’s all in your head.” I wasn’t the only woman dealing with this issue by far. Therefore, I took it upon myself and began researching natural ways to combat my own health concerns. I already tried medicine, but the side effects did a number on my body. I had to find what worked best for me and wanted to help other women with a similar history.
How do you find people to bring into your organization that truly care about the organization the way you do? I turned my social media platform into a mini documentary by sharing personal health stories, the good, the bad and the ugly. My content is relatable, increases awareness, and inviting.
What three pieces of advice would you give to other children who want to become entrepreneurs? Three pieces of advice I would give to other children who want to become entrepreneurs, hmmm...Believe in yourself even if others don’t, do your own research and plan accordingly.
If you had the chance to start your career over again, what would you do differently? Welp, lol. I knew this was coming but here goes...I would not be everything to everyone because it’s a big distraction and exhausting. I’d also be better with time management. As we’ve gotten older we have a better understanding on the value of time. Time is wealth. Health is Queen. Take more risks. You have already lost if you haven’t taken a risk.
What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur ? Time management, adaptability and resilience.
Time management has always been a major factor in my life. From working a full time job in the court system, being a single parent, having a business, and being a support system to my parents.
Adaptability is a must because life can change in an instant. In my case, that instant was being diagnosed with lupus. I needed to adapt to this change immediately and I had no choice.
Resilience is the icing on the cake for me as this is having the ability to recover quickly and in my case, to come back stronger.
What have been some of your failures, and what have you learned from them? Whew, not having a proper business plan, not investing in self and not fully understanding my audience. This is a total recipe for disaster.
How many hours do you work a day on average? A minimum of 12 hours. Yep. Lol This is common for successful entrepreneurs.
Describe/outline your typical day? My daily routine consists of a morning self care regimen, Bible study, content development and creation, research, product prep when needed, responding to Q and A and an evening self care regimen.
How has being an entrepreneur affected your family life? (Sighs)...The way this has impacted my family is them sacrificing their time to help me, by me saying “no” to things I’d typically say “yes” to, it put more pressure on them to do certain things on their own. It also caused a shift in our mental health.
What motivates you? Ultimately, I want my story to be heard in order to help others just like me. Countless times I’ve been brushed off by medical care providers when my chronic pain was killing me. Literally, at its worst. I learned that status doesn’t matter. Celebrities like Beyoncé, Tia Mowry and Serena Williams also had their health concerns dismissed. Racial disparities in healthcare is the driving force and something must be done about it. I’m in for the long haul and scrutiny. Geesh, that’s to be expected simply because I’m a woman of color being a voice for myself and others.
