Fashion Gxd Magazine : How did the idea for your business come about?
Answer: It was a personal challenge finding my own point of view after working for other larger brands for a decade. After giving birth to my son Zyem, I decided to launch my own brand bearing his name, ZYEM NYC. Coming of age in Brooklyn and traveling across the globe has inspired the street style aesthetic.
Fashion Gxd Magazine : How do you find people to bring into your organization that truly care about the organization the way you do?
My organization is currently small and self contained. I am blessed to be part of a network of creatives. My creative friends and I often produce through collaboration, contracting and helping each other when additional hands are needed.
Fashion Gxd Magazine : What three pieces of advice would you give to other children who want to become entrepreneurs?
The three pieces of advice I would give children who want to become entrepreneurs are (1) Money is not the key to happiness. (2) Even if we are great at something, it takes time to become an expert. Master your craft. (3) Be yourself and believe in yourself.
Fashion Gxd Magazine :If you had the chance to start your career over again, what would you do differently?
I'm not sure if I would want to start my career over again, but I would have maybe taken more risks earlier on. It hasn't been a smooth road but I believe everything we experience in our past occurs to prepare us for our future. Strength and wisdom can not be bought.
Fashion Gxd Magazine: What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur ?
The definition of success is very personal especially after experiencing most of 2020. I can only express three skills that I feel that are leading me to success which are (1) Courageousness -Not being afraid to fail. (2) Resilience and a strong work ethic - Being able to persevere in times of uncertainty. We have to be able to work hard even during low points in life. (3) Focus on progress over perfection.
Fashion Gxd Magazine :What have been some of your failures, and what have you learned from them?
In regards to business and my profession, I've missed out on some opportunities due to lack of preparation. The great thing about failing is that after the lesson has been learned, better opportunities that were more suited for me have always presented themselves. Another is not being great at enforcing good boundaries in relationships which can deter focus and growth. I've learned to have more discernment along with boundaries are necessary to maintain a stable atmosphere to thrive.
Fashion Gxd Magazine : How many hours do you work a day on average?
My mind is constantly thinking about new ideas and projects. I also spend time instructing adolescents and social advocacy, so my work/life balance is non-existent. I'm working on having more of a work/life balance in the near future.
Fashion Gxd Magazine: Describe/outline your typical day?
I am not a regimented person. Each day is an adventure in itself juggling multiple projects and motherhood.
Fashion Gxd Magazine : How has being an entrepreneur affected your family life?
Being a creative, being misunderstood is normalized. Being a single Momprenuer, lack of quality time is constantly an issue but my son seems to understand and I hope my work is setting a good example.
Fashion Gxd Magazine :What motivates you?
My motivation is understanding my purpose, value and witnessing the positive effects of contribution.
Fashion Gxd Magazine: How do you generate new ideas?
Just living and experiencing life. There is inspiration everywhere.
Fashion Gxd Magazine : What sacrifices have you had to make to be a successful entrepreneur?
The sacrifice I had to make was to let go of ego and do something hated as an "Ultra Independent". Ask for help.
Fashion Gxd Magazine : Where you see yourself and your business in 10 years? 20 years?
I am not sure if my plan aligns with God's but in 10 years, I will have several businesses under my belt that will lead me to become a multi-millionaire, giving many people opportunities. In 20 years my son will be my predecessor which will allow me to do all of the fun things, make art, teach courses to new generations, design, and travel.
