Fashion Gxd Magazine : How did the idea for your business come about?
Darryl Holiday Jr: I’ve written poetry for most of my life as an emotional release. As I grew older I began to blog and post my poems on social media as a means of self expression . After a while I realized my words resonated and connected with a lot of people, so I continued to share my story.
Fashion Gxd Magazine : How do you find people to bring into your organization that truly care about the organization the way you do?
Darryl Holiday Jr: You have to connect with people you work with on multiple touch points. I believe my product is different because it connects with collaborators and the reader and on a variety of levels. Everyone loves something, or someone and that is why people embrace the brand and the book.
Fashion Gxd Magazine: What three pieces of advice would you give to other children who want to become entrepreneurs?
Darryl Holiday Jr: Start Early, Fail Early, Keep Going
We start to embellish ourselves within our triumphs and forget that our failures are what truly propel us to those moments of success. You must embrace the setbacks and wrong turns as much as possible so you know what roads to avoid in the future. Failures make you who you are, adversity breeds champions in every aspect of life.
Fashion Gxd Magazine :If you had the chance to start your career over again, what would you do differently?
Darryl Holiday Jr: If I had a chance to start over again I would make sure I wrote down all my ideas no matter how outlandish they seemed at the time. You never know what ideas can manifest into masterpieces when cultivated correctly.
Fashion Gxd Magazine: What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur?
Darryl Holiday Jr: 1.) Become fluent in your craft- Know your product/gift like the back of your hand be able to brand yourself and perform appropriately.
2.) Organization- From mandatory paperwork to managing products and clientele- you must be organized to positively progress in your business.
3.) Relationships- The relationships you have are important, and they will make your business. Whether its B2B relationships or with your clients, the relationships you have must be beneficial to all parties and long-lasting.
Fashion Gxd Magazine: What have been some of your failures, and what have you learned from them?
Darryl Holiday Jr: I would say that a failure… or better yet a setback would be becoming stagnant or complacent within your own process. You have to realize that Any progress is good progress. Sometimes I like to accomplish tasks “in bulk” and that causes me to put things off in the distance. I’ve learned that you have to continue to complete tasks even if its minute aspects of that tasks at a time.
Fashion Gxd Magazine: How many hours do you work a day on average?
Darryl Holiday Jr: I honestly write sporadically. From storyboarding in my mind to actual putting words on paper my work day as a creative is 24/7. Writing is much more than putting a pen to paper for an allotted amount of time.
Fashion Gxd Magazine: Describe/outline your typical day?
Darryl Holiday Jr: I don’t believe anything about a creative/ writer’s day is typical because no matter what project we have our hand on, we are always thinking of a master plan. Our minds are always wandering to where the wild things are.
Fashion Gxd Magazine: How has being an entrepreneur affected your family life?
Darryl Holiday Jr: It has its positive and negative moments. The road to personal success pulls and pushes you from certain things in life due to the tug-of-war between you and time. So I would say that is the biggest factor that affects it. Although, there is always a happy medium however small it may be. You just must learn to thrive within it.
Fashion Gxd Magazine: What motivates you?
Darryl Holiday Jr: Childhood dreams and progression. I do what I do for the little kid in me who always wanted to but was told It wasn’t possible. I do it for my current and future family that will one day say, “Wow, he was dope-but I’m going to be better than him.”
Fashion Gxd Magazine: How do you generate new ideas?
Darryl Holiday Jr: My greatest stories and concepts come from me putting in my headphones and going to sit in my car in the pouring rain. There is something soothing about the calamity of that situation. I feel like I can separate it all and grab the true essence of my idea.
Fashion Gxd Magazine: What sacrifices have you had to make to be a successful entrepreneur?
Darryl Holiday Jr: It takes money to make money, and you’re going to lose money before you make money. there is beauty in the process, and you must love the process. Also, you must learn to discipline yourself in unique ways that are specific to you. For example, if you know you procrastinate wake up early. If you must save for a product for your business discipline yourself on saving and spending habits. You must better yourself to better your product.
Fashion Gxd Magazine: Where you see yourself and your business in 10 years? 20 years?
Darryl Holiday Jr: In 5-10 years I see myself with multiple books, poems, and a movie based on a book. I also wish to have a restaurant one day. The restaurant will tie in to my art and creative writing but you’re just going to have to wait and see.
