FGM: Its an honor to sit down with you all. Tell us a little about your brand and how you've come to this vastly successful peak in your career .
Answer: Thank you all so much for this opportunity to chat with you. I started my brand after years of applying makeup on clients and on myself for my Instagram page. Doing this, I worked with many different brands' products and grew a sense of what I liked, what was effective, what was missing, and what I thought would be incredible to see in a makeup line. So I went for it. The brand has completely flourished and exceeded all my expectations!
FGM: Who are the clients/what are the projects that you most enjoy working on?
Answer: The projects that just feed my soul pertain to the designing of products. The themes, the colors, the names, the choosing and designing complementary pieces for the collection, etc. The creative process is the best part! And the clients; everyone! But all the celebrity make up artists that take me/my products on their incredible journeys - that's been a major cherry on top. Seeing my makeup on people like Sza, Rico Nasty, Doechii, on the set of Danny Elfman's music videos, and more I can't even mention yet... it sets my heart and soul on fire.
FGM: How do you feel you make a difference in the world?
Answer: Prior to the brand and now, I feel like the only way to make a difference is to be good, pure, kind, and have the best intentions. I am able to connect now with other artists, my customers, anyone I come across, really. I like to make our time together meaningful and I think that trickles out to making a difference. If one person sees there are still good, genuine people out there- it can change everything and have a butterfly effect.
FGM: Tell us about a time when you showed determination to continue as an entrepreneur
Answer: So far, I haven't hit a snag that made me want to give up, but some of the challenges take a lot of grit and determination. Customers that are extremely defensive and call names or jump to immediate defensiveness, typos on final products, all kinds of things that sort of trip me up. The way I've learned to combat it is by being vulnerable and open. Talking to my customer base about things, being open about the process, explaining when something has gone wrong, letting angry customers know I am a human behind the scenes and that I am not here to take advantage of them. Vulnerability is my biggest strength, in the end. In life and in business. Sure, it can end up wrong but again, good intentions will always prevail. I feel that deep down.
FGM: Give me the three best qualities of your brand
Answer: Quality, innovativeness, and heart. I put everything I have into everything I have done . I won't skimp on quality, I try not to do a single thing that could be considered a copy of someone else, I've even stopped production on things I've felt came too close to something I have seen. It's hard in this super saturated market but I have never been a follower, and getting praised for someone else's ideas has to feel worse than criticism.
FGM: Give me an example of when you worked irregular hours?
Answer: Sheesh, every day! My manufacturer and I are on opposite times, literally day and night. So I will be up until 1-3 AM working on projects with my consultant some days.
FGM: Being a entrepreneur is a 24/7 job, how did you get ready for that?
Answer: I honestly don't think I've been ready for anything I've taken on in my life. Motherhood, being a mother to a child with complex medical needs, starting a business... there's no better way to learn than on the job. And thankfully, I want to do all these things. So they almost never feel like work.
FGM: How did you acquire the ability to work under pressure to beat and meet deadlines as an entrepreneur ?
Answer: As a person who grew up with almost no attention span aside from on the things I was passionate about, I learned how to thrive under pressure to meet deadlines I was given in work and at school. As I get older, I have learned how to manage time a little better- but I am definitely always flying by the seat of my pants.
FGM: What is your favorite inspirational point, place, to develop new brand developments?
Answer: EVERYWHERE. I am so thankful my dad gave me his artistic brain. I see inspiration in what feels like film reels in my head. I see an inspirational piece of art, hear a song, see a movie, a sunset and my gears start spinning.
FGM: Which current public figure, are you inspired by or appreciate the most?
Answer: That's difficult. I think other brand owners. They inspire me, show me what could be, and show tenacity that is very inspirational.
How do you handle stress ?
Answer: Just keep moving. Sure, a good cry helps. I give myself time to feel and work through my thoughts. I try to sort of separate things and then tackle them in ways that I actually can. Divide and conquer... and just keep moving.
FGM: What are the three qualities you feel an entrepreneur must have ?
Answer: Honesty, focus, and determination. Be honest with yourself and others around you, focus only on the goal, and again, keep moving. The makeup world is unique. There's almost a celebrity dynamic to it, which comes with a lot of drama, gossip, clout-chasing, and he-said, she-said... I keep my eyes on the road in front of ME. Comparison, feeding into the extra stuff, giving your energy to things that don't pay you- I'm just thankful I came into this space in my 30s. I don't have time or any desire for it.
FGM: Where do you see your business in 10 years? How do you plan to get there?
Answer: I consistently see the bigger picture. I plan for and acknowledge the worst, and I hunt for the best. Eye on the prize, drown out the noise and go for it. I see my products in the hands of the best, I see my brand soaring, I see really good things but I do acknowledge that's only if it aligns with the plan for me.
FGM: It was a pleasure speaking with you thank you for joining us
Answer: Thank you for this. I am thankful for the time and opportunity to speak with you all!
