1. What inspired you to start Keeping Families Connected, and how has the organization evolved since its inception?
The inspiration for Keeping Families Connected came from my own experience with incarceration and the pain of separation it caused. I vividly remember the days when I longed to see my family but couldn’t afford the transportation to visit them. That deep yearning fueled my desire to ensure no one else would face that kind of isolation. Since our inception, KFC has evolved from a simple transportation service to a holistic support system for families. We’ve expanded our offerings to include counseling, resource sharing, and community workshops, creating a network that nurtures families through their hardships and helps them rebuild their lives.
2. Can you share a memorable story from your work that significantly impacted you or your approach to leadership?
One story that forever changed me was when a mother reached out to us after not seeing her son for over two years. She was overwhelmed with emotion, sharing how she had to choose between paying rent and visiting her child in prison. When we arranged her transportation, she told me it felt like her heart was being stitched back together. That moment reminded me that our work isn’t just about logistics; it’s about healing relationships. It reinforced my approach to leadership—leading with empathy and a deep understanding of the human experience. Every decision I make is rooted in the lives of those we serve.
3. What are some of the biggest challenges you face in running a nonprofit organization focused on transportation to prisons?
One of the most heartbreaking challenges we face is the persistent stigma surrounding incarceration. Many people believe that those who are incarcerated don’t deserve support or that their families should just “get over it.” This mentality makes it difficult to secure funding and support for our mission. Additionally, the logistics of coordinating transport for families who may not have access to reliable means can be incredibly taxing. Each time a family struggles to make a visit, it serves as a reminder of the barriers we are fighting against—barriers that should not exist in a compassionate society.
4. How do you balance your responsibilities as a CEO with your role as a community leader and mentor?
Balancing these roles can be overwhelming, but I remind myself of my purpose every day. As a CEO, I am focused on the organizational aspects, but my heart remains with the families we serve. I often share my own story to foster connection and understanding. I dedicate time each week to mentor individuals in the community, guiding them through their challenges and celebrating their victories. It’s not easy, but knowing that I’m making a difference keeps me grounded. I am not just a leader; I am a part of this community, and that connection fuels my passion.
5. Fashion GXD Magazine is featuring you on its cover; what message do you hope to convey through this feature?
I hope to convey that fashion can be a powerful tool for self-expression and healing. My journey has taught me that even in the darkest times, we can find light and joy through our passions. Through this feature, I want to show others that our pasts do not define us. We can rise, reinvent ourselves, and embrace our unique identities—whether through fashion or community impact. My message is about resilience and the beauty of transformation. We can break free from the chains that hold us down, both physically and metaphorically.
6. What advice would you give to other aspiring entrepreneurs who aim to build an impactful business or nonprofit?
I would tell them to be unwavering in their commitment to their mission but to remain adaptable. Your journey will be filled with challenges, but those challenges will shape you into the leader you need to be. Surround yourself with people who believe in your vision and who will support you through the tough times. Most importantly, never lose sight of the people you’re serving. Let their stories guide your decisions, and always lead with empathy. When your heart is in the right place, everything else will fall into place.
7. How do you envision the future of Keeping Families Connected, and what are your plans for expansion or new initiatives?
I envision a future where Keeping Families Connected is a national model for supporting families impacted by incarceration. I dream of expanding our transportation services to more areas and integrating mental health resources and educational programs to help families rebuild their lives. My goal is to create a comprehensive support network that addresses the multifaceted challenges families face. I believe that when families are empowered, they can break the cycle of incarceration and create a brighter future for generations to come.
8. Can you discuss the role of fashion in your life and how it complements your professional identity?
Fashion plays a significant role in my life as a means of self-expression and empowerment. It allows me to showcase my journey and remind others that we can embrace our identities, no matter our past. In my professional identity, fashion compliments my work by fostering confidence and a sense of belonging. When I present myself authentically, I inspire others to do the same. My style reflects my resilience—a celebration of where I’ve been and a bold statement about where I’m going.
9. What partnerships have been crucial to the success of your organization, and how do you foster those relationships?
Partnerships with local organizations, churches, and businesses have been instrumental in our success. These collaborations allow us to share resources, reach more families, and create a supportive network. I believe in nurturing these relationships through open communication, shared goals, and mutual respect. I make it a priority to celebrate our partners’ contributions and include them in our journey. Together, we can amplify our impact and ensure that families feel supported in every way possible.
10. As someone who inspires many, who or what inspires you to keep pushing forward in both your personal and professional life?
I find inspiration in the families we serve. Each time I see a family reunited. Their resilience fuels my drive to keep pushing forward. I also draw strength from my own past. The journey from darkness to light reminds me that transformation is possible for everyone. I carry their stories with me, and I strive to be a beacon of hope for others who are still in their struggle.
